What does the paint application technique called "Sfumato" entail?
I recently had the opportunity to visit the Louvre in Paris, France where I saw the Mona Lisa and observed that the painting did not show a single brush stroke, like it was airbrushed. Leonardo employed a type of paint application technique called sfumato. What is sfumato?

This is an Italian word for a style of painting that creates depth, volume and form by using coats of translucent layers of color. Colors or tones are blended subtly ... so subtly that you cannot detect a change having been made. This transition is smoky. Leonardo Da Vinci used this techniques many times in his paintings. He described sfumato as being “without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane.”
