What should I do first if I get laid off?
I feel that my company is about to lay off some of its employees and I want to be prepared as best as possible. What are some things I should do in preparation and after the fact to prepare me for unemployment and assure me of getting a new job as soon as possible?

If you want to keep your current job, or even if you don't, you should work harder than you have ever worked and make yourself more valuable to the company. In addition, back up your list of buddies at the company to a disk to use at home for networking.

No matter what the circumstances, when you receive the bad news from your employer, resist the temptation to blame, accuse, or act irrationally. Your employer still holds your future in his hands. If you have simply fallen victim to corporate downsizing, you have certain rights and expectations to be treated relatively fairly.

You may be in a position to negotiate some form of severance package, including a monetary settlement. Do so with tact and respect. You can remind them of your years of dedicated service, loyalty, and contribution to the company. It will not hurt to work out an estimate before the fateful day, to have a place from which to negotiate.

On the actual day of dismissal, if you do not receive a severance benefit, make sure they issue you some form of document which says you were "laid off" and not fired to facilitate your applying for unemployment benefits. Your next step should be to file for unemployment compensation, to start receiving your checks as soon as possible.
