Why does pruning help plants grow?
I can't seem to get my shrubs and flowering plants to look as good as they do in catalogs. Other than for cosmetic reasons, why is pruning a good idea?

It may seem counterintuitive to remove much of a plant to allow it to grow, but by removing unhealthy, old, and weak plant matter you allow all of the plants energy to go into creating vital and healthy new leaves, stems, and buds. Not only does pruning improve the health of your plants, but it creates mulch and allows you a little creative outlet.
