Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk, long experimented with peas and discovered the concept of inherited traits. Genetics is the central study for the foundation of the Theory of Natural Selection by Charles Darwin. It was from this beginning that geneticists were able to create hybrid varieties which displayed traits including improve their resistance to disease.

Of the foods we now consume which are genetically altered, no harmful effects have been demonstrated.
